Windows 11 is a major version of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft, significant changes to the Windows shell influenced by the abolition of Windows 10x, including a redesigned Start menu, and the replacement of "live tiles" with a separate "Widgets" panel on the taskbar.

It also provides the ability to create tiled groups of windows that can be minimized and restored from the taskbar as a group. There are new gaming technologies inherited from Xbox Series X and Series S such as Auto HDR and DirectStorage on compatible devices. Internet Explorer (IE) has been replaced by Microsoft Edge based on the Blink engine.

Microsoft has increased hardware requirements compared to Windows 10. Now it only supports the OS with updates on devices that use an 8th generation Intel Core CPU or later (with some exceptions). The AMD Ryzen CPU is also based on the Zen+ micro architecture or later. Or Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 ARM on-chip or later. Windows 11 is designed for UEFI secure boot and Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 support. Additionally, Windows 11 no longer supports 32-bit x86 architecture or systems that use BIOS firmware.

To fully understand the magic of Windows 11, you must have it in your hands. In Windows 11, you'll find more features like chat with Microsoft Teams and Android apps in the Microsoft Store over the coming months because they're ready for you.

Beautiful, fresh and quiet visuals and sounds

From rounded corners to content centering and new animations, this new visual design spans across multiple areas of Windows 11. Here are some of the key highlights you'll see after installing this version:

  • Start: Start puts everything you need on your PC in the middle with a bunch of installed apps and a "Recommended" section that runs on the cloud. Shows recently opened files from your computer and across your devices such as your smartphone using OneDrive.
  • Taskbar: The taskbar is also centered with a beautiful new animation. Try pinning, launching, switching, minimizing, and rearranging your apps on the taskbar to see beautiful new animations.
  • Notification Center and Quick Settings: The lower right corner of the taskbar contains a button for Notification Center (WIN + N) and Quick Settings (WIN + A). The Notification Center is the main place for all your notifications in the operating system and a full-month calendar view.
  • File Explorer: File Explorer has been updated with a clean look and a brand new command bar. It also offers beautifully designed context menus when right-clicking in File Explorer or on the desktop. Application developers will be able to expand the new context menus.
  • Themes: In addition to the all-new default Windows 11 themes for both dark and light mode, it also includes four additional themes so you can make Windows feel the way you want. All new themes are designed to compliment the central taskbar. To change your theme, just right-click on the desktop and select "Personalize".
  • Sounds: The sounds in Windows 11 nos are lighter and more atmospheric. They also differ slightly depending on whether the Windows theme is in dark mode or light mode. The Windows startup sound is also back where you will hear when your computer starts up.

widgets

Gadgets bring you closer to the information you want and need. Just click on the widgets icon in the taskbar. Swipe from the left using touch, or press WIN + W on your keyboard. Your widgets slide from the left over the desktop. You can customize your experience by adding or removing widgets, rearranging, resizing and personalizing content. Our suite of tools currently focuses on calendar, weather, local traffic, and your Microsoft To Do lists. So are your OneDrive photos, sports, esports, stock watchlist, and tips.

multitasking

Increase your productivity and creativity with these new multitasking features:

  • Snap Layouts: Simply move your mouse over the window's maximize button to see the available snap layouts, then click an area to snap the window. You will then be instructed to align the windows to the rest of the areas within the layout with the help of the how-to tool. For smaller screens, a set of 4 quick formats will be offered. You can also invoke the popup snap layouts using the keyboard shortcut WIN + Z.
  • Snap groups: Snap groups are a way to easily switch to your captured windows. To try this, capture together at least two application windows on your screen.
  • Desktops: Access your desktops by viewing the taskbar (WIN + Tab) on the taskbar. You can rearrange and customize wallpapers for each of your desktops.

docking

When you undock your laptop, the windows on your external screen will be minimized. When you dock your PC to your monitor, Windows puts everything back in its place just as it was before! You can find the settings for these features under System > Display > Multiple screens.

Input (touch, inking, and voice)

  • Customize the touch keyboard: To personalize your Windows experience, we've designed 13 new touch keyboard themes including three hardware-matching themes that match Surface colors. All-new theme engine allows you to create fully customized theme including background images. Based on your feedback, we have also introduced a setting to change the size of the touch keyboard.
  • Voice Typing Launcher: New Voice Typing Launcher is a quick and easy way to start voice typing in a specific text field.
  • Enhanced touch gestures: Check out new on-screen touch gestures so you can easily switch between apps and desktops with smooth transitions. Gestures are similar to touchpad gestures but contain thoughtful improvements designed specifically for touch.
  • Pen menu: If you are using a digital pen, you can open the pen menu by clicking on the pen icon at the bottom right of the taskbar. By default, it has two apps that you can customize by clicking the gear button and selecting Edit Pen List.
  • Language/input switcher: You can quickly switch between additional languages and keyboards via a switch. The switch will appear in the lower-right part of the taskbar next to Quick Settings. You can also use the keyboard shortcut WIN + [SPACEBAR] to switch between input methods. To add additional languages and keyboards, go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region.

Display improvements

  • Dynamic Refresh Rate: Dynamic Refresh Rate allows your computer to automatically increase the refresh rate when you are inking or scrolling (which means you'll have a smoother experience) and lower it when you don't need it so that your laptop can save power. You can try out DRR on your laptop in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, and under "Choose refresh rate" select "Dynamic" refresh rate.
  • Other display improvements coming in Windows 11: Auto HDR, disabling adaptive content brightness control (CABC), HDR support for color-managed apps, and HDR certification.

Windows Settings

The new settings are designed to be beautiful, easy to use, and comprehensive for all of your Microsoft experiences in Windows 11. Settings have a left-hand navigation that continues between pages. Navigational paths on the go have been added deeper into the settings to help you know where you are and not lose track of where you are. These new controls span across several category pages such as System, Bluetooth, Devices, Network, Internet, Personalization, Accounts, and Windows Update.

Wi-Fi 6E support

Wi-Fi 6E has been added to the Windows ecosystem, enabling Windows OEMs, wireless IHVs, and ecosystem partners to deliver leading-edge Wi-Fi on new Windows PCs. It's a revolutionary advance that enables up to three times more Wi-Fi bandwidth and will transform Wi-Fi experiences with faster speeds, more capacity, lower latency, and better security.
